Adelaide “Della” Saxony
Surname from the Duchy (Saxony) that the Byzantine Holy Roman Emperor first inherited at his father’s death. First name is from Holy Roman Empress Adelaide (931-999) who may have been the inspiration for the change of the Vizier piece on the board evolving into Queen.
Age: Della is 22 years old, and has been the legal guardian of her much younger brother since their parents died.
Home: Della and Christopher live in their childhood home, left to them by their parents. The house is not huge, but it is theirs. It is wildly decorated in intense contrasting prints by their now deceased mother who had been an interior designer. (There are some hints that perhaps the mother decorated the doctors house as well.)
Lives With: Della still sleeps in her childhood bedroom. She and Christopher never fight the way they did before they lost their parents. Christopher loves his sister dearly, and she loves him. Their mutual losses brought them together and taught them how important family is, even if that family is a different size or shape that the traditional models.
Pets: There is no room for pets in the life of a young woman trying to attend college and simultaneously raise her brother.
Hobbies: In what little spare time she has, ‘Della tries to study chess. As a much younger child she was a chess prodigy, and won all kinds of awards and tournaments, leading to her early ranking as a master. This accomplishment was considerably more impressive as she became a teenager and refused to only play against girls. After some particularly sexist arguments from parents who opposed her joining the boy’s competitions, the obstinate teenager and her supportive parents forced Della’s way in. Once allowed to compete, she beat every male challenger who appeared, likely the exact reason the opposition to her playing had wanted to keep her away.
Education: If there was any bright side to her parents death, it was that when it happened (mysterious accident) Della had already graduated from high school and was looking for colleges and spending her summer working at the local public library. Now that years have passed, Della is taking classes at the local college as she works and cares for her brother. Its slow going but her determination has made a lot of things in her life happen that seemed impossible at first.
Family: Della was an only child for 11 years before her brother was born. Her father had been a military strategist until he retired and worked as an urban planner. Della’s mother had been significantly younger than her husband, but it never mattered to anyone. Mom was an interior designer, and had done some beautiful rooms and homes around town. Now that they are both gone, the only family she has is Christopher. Both parents were only children and the grandparents had been gone long before either child was born. Though their parents had many friends, the siblings were dropped from their families social circle relatively soon after the funerals, almost as though people were afraid that death was somehow contagious.
Skills: Incredible work ethic, relentlessly driven, physically and mentally strong, inflexible in her morality, long memory, skilled chess player, loving, well mannered, kind, empathetic….
Fears: Della most fear that she will mess up what remains of Christopher’s childhood, or that somehow she will stunt his potential by raising him ‘wrong’. There is also the underlying fear that something will happen to her brother, and that she will be totally alone in the world. She is able to out maneuver the constant onslaught of fear and self criticism by working as hard as she can to make Christopher's life the best that she can. She also works on teaching her brother chess, a game she was taught by her father. She rememebers him telling her that there were many skills for life that a person could learn on the chess board.
